- ItemAssessment of the Influence of Technology-Based Distracted Driving on Drivers' Infractions and Their Subsequent Impact on Traffic Accidents Severity(International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, MDPI, 2021) Garcia-Herrero Susana; Febres Juan Diego; Boulagouas Wafa; Gutierrez Jose Manuel; Mariscal Saldana Miguel AngelMultitasking while driving negatively affects driving performance and threatens people’s lives every day. Moreover, technology-based distractions are among the top driving distractions that are proven to divert the driver’s attention away from the road and compromise their safety. This study employs recent data on road traffic accidents that occurred in Spain and uses a machine-learning algorithm to analyze, in the first place, the influence of technology-based distracted driving on drivers’ infractions considering the gender and age of the drivers and the zone and the type of vehicle. It assesses, in the second place, the impact of drivers’ infractions on the severity of traffic accidents. Findings show that (i) technology-based distractions are likely to increase the probability of committing aberrant infractions and speed infractions; (ii) technology-based distracted young drivers are more likely to speed and commit aberrant infractions; (iii) distracted motorcycles and squad riders are found more likely to speed; (iv) the probability of committing infractions by distracted drivers increases on streets and highways; and, finally, (v) drivers’ infractions lead to serious injuries.
- ItemCascade sliding mode maximum power point tracking controller for photovoltaic systems.(2023) Hessad M-A, Bouchama Z, Benaggoune S, Behih KIntroduction. Constant increases in power consumption by both industrial and individual users may cause depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution, and hence there is a growing interest in clean and renewable energy resources. Photovoltaic power generation systems are playing an important role as a clean power electricity source in meeting future electricity demands. Problem. All photovoltaic systems have two problems; the first one being the very low electric-power generation efficiency, especially under low-irradiation states; the second resides in the interdependence of the amount of the electric power generated by solar arrays and the ever changing weather conditions. Load mismatch can occur under these weather varying conditions such that maximum power is not extracted and delivered to the load. This issue constitutes the so-called maximum power point tracking problem. Aim. Many methods have been developed to determine the maximum power point under all conditions. There are various methods, in most of them based on the well-known principle of perturb and observe. In this method, the operating point oscillates at a certain amplitude, no matter whether the maximum power point is reached or not. That is, this oscillation remains even in the steady state after reaching the maximum power point, which leads to power loss. This is an essential drawback of the previous method. In this paper, a cascade sliding mode maximum power point tracking control for a photovoltaic system is proposed to overcome above mentioned problems. Methodology. The photovoltaic system is mainly composed of a solar array, DC/DC boost converter, cascade sliding mode controller, and an output load. Two sliding mode control design strategies are joined to construct the proposed controller. The primary sliding mode algorithm is designed for maximum power point searching, i.e., to track the output reference voltage of the solar array. This voltage is used to manipulate the setpoint of the secondary sliding mode controller, which is used via the DC-DC boost converter to achieve maximum power output. Results. This novel approach provides a good transient response, a low tracking error and a very fast reaction against the solar radiation and photovoltaic cell temperature variations. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in the presence of environmental disturbances.
- ItemComparative Study Between Data-Based Approaches Under Earlier Failure Detection, in ICCIS2020. Vol 204. India: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems ; 20(2021) HADJIDJ N, Benbrahim M, Berghout T, Mouss L-HA comparative study between a set of chosen machine learning tools for direct remaining useful life prediction is presented in this work. The main objective of this study is to select the appropriate prediction tool for health estimation of aircraft engines for future uses. The training algorithms are evaluated using “time-varying” data retrieved from Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation (C-MAPSS) developed by NASA. The training and testing processes of each algorithm are carried out under the same circumstances using the similar initial condition and evaluation sets. The results prove that among the studied training tools, Support vector machine (SVM) achieved the best results.
- ItemComputer Aided Inspection by Reverse Engineering for Reproduction of Gear Teeth(2022) Selloum R, Ameddah H, Brioua MIn the industry, automated inspection is important for ensuring the high quality and allows acceleration of procedures for quality control of parts or mechanical assemblies. Although significant progress has been made in precision machining of complex surfaces, precision inspection of such surfaces remains a difficult problem. Thus the problem of the conformity of the parts of complex geometry is felt more and more. Motivated by the need to increase quality and reduce costs, and supported by the progress made in the field of it as well as the automation of production which in recent years has seen a considerable evolution in all these stages: from design to control through manufacturing. Due to, we used a 3D computer aided inspection technique on a physical gear using a coordinate measuring machine equipped with a “PC-DMIS” measurement and inspection software. Our work consists in developing a procedure for inspection for reproduction of gear profile by reconstruction of a circle involute gear from a cloud point’s measurement. In order to obtain a reliable result. In this works, we design the CAD-model of the part as accurately as possible (using a mathematical model) and matched with the 3D points cloud that represents the measurement that obtained from scanner. we compare the measurement cloud points from coordinate measurement machine with the mathematical model of construction by ICP (Iterative Closest Point) methods in order to obtain a conformed result and to show the impact of the dimensional inspection and geometric.

- ItemEffects of Mobile Phone Use on Driving Performance: An Experimental Study of Workload and Traffic Violations(International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, MDPI, 2021) Ortega Carlos Alberto Catalina; Mariscal Miguel Angel ; Boulagouas Wafa; Herrera Sixto; Espinosa Juan Maria; Garcia-Herrero SusanaThe use of communication technologies, e.g., mobile phones, has increased dramatically in recent years, and their use among drivers has become a great risk to traffic safety. The present study assessed the workload and road ordinary violations, utilizing driving data collected from 39 young participants who underwent a dual-task while driving a simulator, i.e., respond to a call, text on WhatsApp, and check Instagram. Findings confirmed that there are significant differences in the driving performance of young drivers in terms of vehicle control (i.e., lateral distance and hard shoulder line violations) between distracted and non-distracted drivers. Furthermore, the overall workload score of young drivers increases with the use of their mobile phones while driving. The obtained results contribute to a better understanding of the driving performance of distracted young drivers and thus they could be useful for further improvements to traffic safety strategies.
- ItemEffects of mobile phone-related distraction on driving performance at roundabouts: Eye movements tracking perspective(Heliyon, ELSEVIER, 2024) Boulagouas Wafa; Catalina Ortega Carlos Alberto; Mariscal Miguel Angel; Herrera Sixto; Garcia-Herrero SusanaModern road infrastructures are complex networks featuring various elements such as roads, bridges, intersections, and roundabouts, with advanced control systems. Roundabouts have gained prominence as a safer alternative to traditional intersections promoting smoother traffic flow and fewer collisions by guiding traffic in one direction, encouraging reduced speed, and minimizing conflict points. This study investigated driver behavior within roundabouts, focusing on gaze behavior, particularly the left-side mirror and window, under mobile phone distraction conditions. In addition, the effects of roundabout specifications (i.e., number of lanes and size of the central island) and the drivers’ characteristics (i.e., driving experience) were examined. In total, 43 participants, aged 19–56 years including 30 males and 13 females, held a valid driving license, drove through a virtual simulated urban road containing four roundabouts, implemented in a static driving simulator, under baseline condition (no distraction) as well as mobile-induced distraction. Driving simulator data were collected and drivers’ gaze direction and fixation on nine areas of interest were captured with an eye tracker. Results showed that experienced drivers exhibit a more fixation on the left-side mirror and window and were less distracted. Moreover, the road environment, i.e., the number of cars and the roundabout size, significantly influenced the drivers’ attention. As regards the driving performance, the number of infractions increased when the drivers diverted focus from the left side of the car. The outcomes of the present study might help to improve traffic safety at roundabouts.
- ItemFederated Learning for Condition Monitoring of Industrial Processes: A Review on Fault Diagnosis Methods, Challenges, and Prospects.(2023) Berghout T, Benbouzid M, Bentrcia T, Lim W-H, AmiratCondition monitoring (CM) of industrial processes is essential for reducing downtime and increasing productivity through accurate Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) scheduling. Indeed, advanced intelligent learning systems for Fault Diagnosis (FD) make it possible to effectively isolate and identify the origins of faults. Proven smart industrial infrastructure technology enables FD to be a fully decentralized distributed computing task. To this end, such distribution among different regions/institutions, often subject to so-called data islanding, is limited to privacy, security risks, and industry competition due to the limitation of legal regulations or conflicts of interest. Therefore, Federated Learning (FL) is considered an efficient process of separating data from multiple participants to collaboratively train an intelligent and reliable FD model. As no comprehensive study has been introduced on this subject to date, as far as we know, such a review-based study is urgently needed. Within this scope, our work is devoted to reviewing recent advances in FL applications for process diagnostics, while FD methods, challenges, and future prospects are given special attention.
- ItemHybrid Heuristic Optimization of an Integrated Production Distribution System with Stock and Transportation Costs(2021) Bensakhria M, Abdelhamid SIn this paper we address the integration of two-level supply chain with multiple items, production facility and retailers’ demand over a considered discrete time horizon. This two-level production distribution system features capacitated production facility supplying several retailers located in the same region. If production does take place, this process incurs a fixed setup cost as well as unit production costs. In addition, deliveries are made from the plant to the retailers by a limited number of capacitated vehicles and routing costs are incurred. This work aims at implementing a solution to minimize the sum of the costs at the production facility and the retailers. The methodology adopted to tackle this issue is based on a hybrid heuristic, greedy and genetic algorithms that uses strong formulation to provide a good solution of a guaranteed quality that are as good or better than those provided by the MIP optimizer with a considerably larger run time. The results demonstrate that the proposed heuristics are effective and performs impressively in terms of computational efficiency and solution quality.
- ItemIndirect adaptive fuzzy finite time synergetic control for power systems.(2023) Khatir A, Bouchama Z, Benaggoune S, Zerroug NIntroduction. Budget constraints in a world ravenous for electrical power have led utility companies to operate generating stations with full power and sometimes at the limit of stability. In such drastic conditions the occurrence of any contingency or disturbance may lead to a critical situation starting with poorly damped oscillations followed by loss of synchronism and power system instability. In the past decades, the utilization of supplementary excitation control signals for improving power system stability has received much attention. Power system stabilizers (PSS) are used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp low-frequency oscillations caused by load disturbances or short-circuit faults. Problem. Adaptive power system stabilizers have been proposed to adequately deal with a wide range of operating conditions, but they suffer from the major drawback of requiring parameter model identification, state observation and on-line feedback gain computation. Power systems are nonlinear systems, with configurations and parameters that fluctuate with time that which require a fully nonlinear model and an adaptive control scheme for a practical operating environment. A new nonlinear adaptive fuzzy approach based on synergetic control theory which has been developed for nonlinear power system stabilizers to overcome above mentioned problems. Aim. Synergetic control theory has been successfully applied in the design of power system stabilizers is a most promising robust control technique relying on the same principle of invariance found in sliding mode control, but without its chattering drawback. In most of its applications, synergetic control law was designed based on an asymptotic stability analysis and the system trajectories evolve to a specified attractor reaching the equilibrium in an infinite time. In this paper an indirect finite time adaptive fuzzy synergetic power system stabilizer for damping local and inter-area modes of oscillations for power systems is presented. Methodology. The proposed controller design is based on an adaptive fuzzy control combining a synergetic control theory with a finite-time attractor and Lyapunov synthesis. Enhancing existing adaptive fuzzy synergetic power system stabilizer, where fuzzy systems are used to approximate unknown system dynamics and robust synergetic control for only providing asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system, the proposed technique procures finite time convergence property in the derivation of the continuous synergetic control law. Analytical proofs for finite time convergence are presented confirming that the proposed adaptive scheme can guarantee that system signals are bounded and finite time stability obtained. Results. The performance of the proposed stabilizer is evaluated for a single machine infinite bus system and for a multi machine power system under different type of disturbances. Simulation results are compared to those obtained with a conventional adaptive fuzzy synergetic controller.
- ItemIntegrated production and maintenance planning in hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing system with outsourcing opportunities(2022) Merghem M, Haoues M, Mouss K-N, Dahane M, SENOUSSI AThis paper deals with the problem of integrated production and maintenance planning with different qualities of returned products and outsourcing opportunities in a closed-loop supply chain context. The considered network consists of one manufacturer in a relationship with an outsourcing provider. The manufacturer is considered as hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing system. It produces the new products and collects returned ones for remanufacturing activities. The outsourcing provider specializes in the remanufacturing of returned products from the collection and sorting center that the manufacturer is unable to reprocess. We propose an integrated control policy based on mathematical programming, which aims to determine the integrated production and maintenance planning in a hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing context with outsourcing options. The proposed strategy minimizes the total cost of the system over a finite planning horizon, including manufacturing, in-house remanufacturing, outsourced remanufacturing, maintenance, holding, backlogging, and disposal costs. To show the applicability and validity of the developed model, we implement an iterative procedure using Matlab and CPLEX solver of GAMS. We conduct and discuss computational experiments to investigate managerial insights for the newly developed integrated strategy.
