Emotion, which translates through speech informs us about the emotional state of the speaker, has been the object of critique, exclusion and integration in the field of literature research. On the one hand, it was rejected by Plato, who argues it defies reason. On the other hand, Aristotle argues it is a means of persuasion and reinforcing the speaker’s argument by soliciting his emotions. Although emotion is absent from many contemporary theories of argument, It has recently made a come-back in recent research in the field. In this project, we researched the various manifestations of argued emotion in the digital discourse. We aimed to identify semiotisation modalities of emotion and analyse its argumentative construct in digital comments on Facebook, posted as a reaction to different controversial topics. We found that internet users show emotions through their comments both explicitly and implicitly. The latter being inferred using clues from the lexical and syntaxic construct and language style as well as other features characteristic of the multimodal digital space. The arguments justifying the emotions were of varying natures: linguistic processes related to the event and others related to the person. Moreover, we have discovered a new non-linguistic form specific to the digital sphere.
